It is probably all about progressing in my simple life. History provides the experiences for progressing. Science offers the strategies for progressing. Thinking produces the goal for progressing. Inspiration points the trend for progessing. Most of the time we are probably accumulating the knowledge and techniques, like myself, which is the so-called science, eventhough we may not have a goal at all. There are fortunate people that find their aim and direction early in their life, or some extremely lucky individuals who are born with one. I am certainly not one of either. However, we spend so much time wondering in the endless sea of knowledge and information and bening drunk with the gaining of more tricks and anecdotes that we ignore the necessity of having a goal or a direction. What's worse, we often ignore the rich nutrients in the history, as critisized by a lot of the successful. Gates believes that his success is a direct result of mastering a trend. Thus, the ultimate goal is probably someday I can, by studying a little bit of the science, learning a little piece of the history, deliberating for some time, have a little taste of the trend in some field... It seems that you won't know how deep it is until you go in there... Still rambling and mamboing on my way not knowing what to happen.... The taste of unkowing, however, is very trembling, yet amazing. 12/4/2008 zz from GJ's xiaonei...So called

Part 1. TA Teaching assistant is a part of you Candidacy exam. I have not heard of anyone that has problem with the TA evaluation for the Candidacy. However, you may want to do what you are responsible for when you are assigned with a certain TA. Different TA has different schedules. My TA is Micro 342 which involves supervising experiments and grading reports. It will take 1) half a day per week to supervise undergraduates' experiments; 2) a couple of hours per week to do pre run which may not be every week; 3) a couple of hours to grade the reports. A typical class site is about 20 students. The professors are Dr. Grove and Dr. Padala. They are nice. The experiments cover the PCR, DNA cloning, transformation, kinetics, PH measurement, buffer making, protein isolation (anion/cation exchange column), MM equilibrium, etc. It is a little bit time consuming. However, you won't have problems with the techniques and the supervisors usually.
Part 2. 2 pages research sum When you enter the second year of the BMMB program you are expected to turn in a two-page summary of your research work. The references are put into a third page. You will need to do that before the start of the fall semester of the second year. Within these two pages, you need to describe the general pictures and details of your research work. The advisor will help you review this before you turn it in to Linda. Please keep in mind that most of the professors won't event remember that since they are very busy. So please check with him/her during the summer break in advance, to see if they have any particular demand for the content or formula of your summary. You typically need to read about 8-10 papers to write it. (That is how many papers the other people cited as their references and of course the more the better).
Part3. Presentation After everyone has turned in their sum, Dr. Porter will give you an envelop containing your TA evaluation and a letter describing what you need to do for the oral candidacy exam and who are in your candidacy committee. Your committee members are assigned by Dr. Porter and your mentor is not within them. You need to contact your committee members to make an appointment when everyone of the 3 (usually three professors in your committee) professors can attend. This is usually the most time consuming part since they are busy. However, they will give you some choices to choose from according to my experience. After you have made the time, you need to reserve a room and a projector for your exam with Linda. Exactly 3 week before your exam, you will get the paper from the Chair of your committee and you can start to prepare. This paper is selected by the Chair from the 3 or 4 papers offered by your advisor to the committee. You need a one-page sum (with references on an extra page) of the paper you are given, one week before the Exam day. Linda will probably remind you of that and you need to send the sum via email to Linda on week before the Exam Day. (You need to describe the idea of the paper and you need to include your own opinion of the logic and conclusion of the paper. Just be critical!!) You need a PPT describing the paper you are given. The candidacy exam itself will last usually somewhere between 1.5 hours or 2 depending on your committee. You will know the result right after that. You need to prepare the Chalk talk of your own research project.
Some tips: 1. Bring some drinks or snakes for the committee. 2. Come earlier to make sure that the project and computer work. 3. You need usually about 25-30 slides of PPT. 4. They will ask you questions whenever they want, so prepare to be interrupted from the very beginning. 5. They are interested in your background of science (biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology etc.) as well as the complete understanding of the paper. 6. Please make sure that you understand every single word you put on your slides because they will test you those and that is usually where their questions are from. 7. Do not “bullshit”…( Just think about their question, if you do not know, admit it or tell them where you may find the answer, do not try to make things up.) 8. Know the background of your committee members and pay attention to that when you prepare your slides as well as when you present. You need to cover the level of all your audience. 9. They will appreciate if you can be critical about the paper’s data and give them your own opinions rather than merely present what is on the paper. 10. You will be asked to leave the room before and after the exam so that they can talk about you. 11. You need to be able to chalk talk your own project and this is usually a minor part since they are getting tired after your presentation (I spent 1 hour and 15 minutes on the presentation of the paper, and no more than 20 minutes on my own research.) 12. You will know the result right away. 13. You need to dress formally ( at least business casual). 14. You are not supposed to get help from your advisor but you can ask anyone else in the lab. 15. Do a mocking presentation a couple of days before will help a lot. 16. For dear Chinese fellows: please do not talk too fast and make sure that you understand their questions before you answer them. 17. You have a second chance to take it if you did not pass at the first time within the same semester.
Good luck. 10/23/2008 About the 1st Penn State Chinese Cultural Festival ---- A letter from someone I did not know before. To those who may see...
From: Jeff Knapp
Date: Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 6:41 AM Subject: Thank you so much for a wonderful event! To: PSUCFAEVENT@gmail.com To all of the wonderful members of the Penn State Chinese Friendship Association: On behalf of my wife and our Chinese daughter, Hai Ning, I would like to send our most heartfelt thanks for an absolutely wonderful experience last evening at your Chinese Cultural Festival! We had so much fun and we truly felt the beauty and warmth of the Chinese culture. Our daughter already cherishes the Chinese Opera mask she got to make, the patience of Li-Li, who helped her do a papercut of a monkey (thanks Li-Li!), the calligraphy of her name in classical Chinese characters, and having tea with the young woman from Foshan, Hai Ning's home city! It was so well-organized and fun. Please forward this to anyone who was involved, to let them know how deeply we appreciate the chance to help our daughter learn more about her beautiful culture and the wonderful people who have allowed us to become a family! We will be mailing a contribution to your association this evening and we hope you will continue this event in the future. Thank you again!
